I had to read two articles about free speech and how kids use the internet. I think everyone should have a right of free speech especially if they are using the internet outside of school. It should not brother anyone in school and they should not be penalized for it. The two articles that I read had some strong information to prove there points.

I think schools don’t have the right to penalize students for there behavior outside of school. What they do outside of school is there business and they shouldn’t have to suffer the consciences. When Katherine Evans created a face book and wrote a rant against her teacher she got in trouble for saying bad things about her teacher. After a few days Katherine she removed the posted facebook and focused on her journalism career. Then two months later Katherine got called down to the principles office and was suspended and wasn’t going to graduate. But she thought it was unfair for them to suspend her so she sued the principle. Her cases want to Supreme Court but she won the case because what ever she did wrote on facebook was outside of school and principle can not get her in trouble because she didn’t make the facebook website from the schools computer so she had a freedom of speech and she didn’t get in trouble and she graduated and moved on.
I think the limits of internet speech her not to use profanity no matter how much you dislike someone. Like I the article that I read Doningerad called the administrators a douche bag because that would get anyone in trouble. I think putting up pictures of the people that you don’t like and commenting them so that everyone could see is not a safe thing to do either because that could get the other person in trouble by the police. So you really have to watch what you say on the internet about someone that you don’t like because either way you would get in trouble because the police can arrest you if someone complains and they saw the prove.
Yes schools do have the right to limit student expression within the school. Because what you do on the computers at school the teachers or the office have the access to go through your file and see what you do on the computer. Also it’s not easy to go on a website that you want to go like facebook or myspace because they block the website. It’s important to block same websites because of the school policy and they don’t want students going on the website there not suppose to. So yes schools do have the right to limit student expression.
From the two articles that I read I liked the New York Times better. I thought it was interesting because it was a good piece of writing and was true that what we do outside of school is not the schools concern.
